In 1607, colonists established Jamestown, Virginia— the first permanent English settlement in North America. Two centuries of establishing a new nation, settlement of territories, and exploration of the continent followed. In November of 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition reached the other side of what we now call the United States of America, setting eyes on the Pacific Ocean. Between those two shores lie 3000 miles of stories; tales of the lives that shaped a nation.
This sampler is a celebration of the brave women and men that spent their lives trying to create a better place for their children. With nods to the seafarers, the settlers, the rebels, the farmers, the explorers— the story stitched into this piece is a journey of centuries.
I recognize that the story of our nation isn’t all light and hope; there was more bloodshed and tragedy on this continent than ever should have happened on a million planets. I don’t believe we should ignore the atrocities of the past— but I do want to ponder and be inspired by the lives that were lived and the good that was done alongside the bad. There will always be cruelty and greed and power struggles, but I like to believe that regular people are also right there, all the time, quietly (or not so quietly) working to right wrongs and keep the scales tipped toward love and beauty. I hope that as you stitch your sampler, you are reminded of the reasons this nation is and can be truly Great from sea to shining sea.
