Colonial Rebels Needle Roll by Heartstring Samplery

An Exclusive Design for Liberty Hill Needleworks from Heartstring Samplery

From Designer Beth Twist of Heartstring Samplery:

In the midst of designing my “Sea To Shining Sea” sampler, I found myself quite taken with the little row of American Colonial-era rebels and the stories they represented. I decided right there on the spot that they needed their very own stand alone design. I added Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” below their feet, but they are otherwise unchanged from the sampler.

Starting from the left, I introduce to you:

Ebenezer Mudgett, leader of the Pine Tree Riot of 1772.

A burning pile of stamps representing the colonists’ revolts in 1765 against the British Parliament’s Stamp Act.

Agent 355, a female member of a prominent Loyalist family in NYC who gathered intelligence and passed it along secretly to George Washington’s espionage network, the Culper Ring.

Samuel Adams, founder of the Sons of Liberty, the group responsible for the actions later called The Boston Tea Party.

Charity Clarke, a young woman who was one of many who turned domestic labor into civil disobedience. Because women controlled household consumption, the success of colonial boycotts depended on them— so they turned spinning, weaving, brewing and even shopping into powerful political tools. Charity wrote to an English cousin that although “heroines may not distinguish themselves at the head of an Army,” the women of America constituted “a fighting army of Amazones… armed with spinning wheels.”

Paul Revere, on his famous April 18, 1775 midnight ride.

I chose to turn my little row of rebels into a needle book, but I think it would be absolutely darling as a long skinny pin cushion or even as a pin drum. I hope you have fun deciding what to do with yours.
